The Speakers of the House of Representatives and the House of Commons of Bosnia, Denis Zvizdic and Bakir Izetbegovic, wrote a joint letter to senior EU and US officials and relevant institutions, warning them of the situation in the country caused by Milorad Dodik, the Serbian member of the Presidency and his party. working to dismantle state institutions and repeal state laws.
The letter was addressed to the President of the European Parliament David Sassoli, the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen, the EU High Commissioner for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell, the President of the European Council Charles Michel and members of the Council, the Presidents of the House of Commons Representatives and the Senate. in the US Congress, Nancy Pelosi and Joseph Leahy, and other relevant representatives of the EU institutions, the Council of Europe and the US. They also sent it to several hundred addresses, including all MEPs, members of the BiH Friends Group in the US Congress and foreign ministers of all EU member states.
In the letter, Zvizdic and Izetbegovic warned of the current situation in the country and the possibility of escalating tensions created by the unconstitutional and illegal activities of some Serb-dominated Republika Srpska (RS) political forces.
“We can say with certainty that BiH would be a much more stable and successful state today if it were not for the activities of the Alliance of Independent Social Democrats (SNSD) party led by Milorad Dodik. In the last 15 years, initially modestly and over time even more open and courageous, this politician and his associates impeded the country’s progress on its Euro-Atlantic path and did everything to preserve apartheid in relation to Croats and Bosniaks in RS, ”N1. cites the letter.
Izetbegovic and Zvizdic recalled that in official documents from the SNSD party congress from 2015, the party stated that the party’s strategic goal is the secession of the RS entity from BiH. According to the letter, this would be the end of the goals of Radovan Karadzic and Ratko Mladic during the war by political means.
They point out that SNSD and their coalition partners have begun activities that directly threaten the Dayton Peace Accords that ended the 1992-1995 war in the country and the BiH Constitution as an integral part of the Agreement. In this context, they single out the activities related to the so-called process of “returning competencies to entities”, which, according to them, is a euphemism for the unconstitutional repeal of BiH state laws in RS and the formation of pre-state institutions in that entity. .
The Speakers of the two BiH Parliamentary Chambers also reminded that the EU and the US are among the signatories of the Dayton Peace Agreement and that they have the obligation to react in cases of violation of its provisions and that they expect concrete activities that will confirm support for BiH sovereignty and territorial integrity.
“Any calculation and postponement of a concrete response has a stimulating effect on those seeking to overturn the Dayton Peace Accords, and thus threaten peace and stability in BiH, the region, and even the rest of the European continent.” Only with a decisive joint response from us in BiH, the EU and the US, as well as other witness guarantors of the signatories of the Dayton Peace Accords, will we be able to stop the catastrophic consequences that will arise as a result of the threats. by Dodik’s political followers from RS. An alternative to this is the collapse of the Dayton Peace Accords, and consequently the peace in BiH. “We must prevent this scenario by all means,” the letter concludes.
