BiH: MEPs react strongly to recent events in RS National Assembly

After the Republika Srpska National Assembly approved the draft law on medicines and medical equipment, which provides for the establishment of an entity-level medicine agency, and denied the powers of the draft state law in the territory of Republika Srpska, some MEPs raised their voices calling for an immediate ban on destruction. of state institutions.

The move is seen as a sign that the leader of the ruling party in RS and a member of BiH’s tripartite presidency, Milorad Dodik, has begun implementing his announced efforts to transfer powers from the state to the entity in order to expand its autonomy. Republika Srpska.

Eight MEPs sign letter sent to EU High Representative for Bosnia and Herzegovina Christian Schmidt and EU High Representative Josep Borrell, expressing “greatest concern” with developments in BiH, as well as steps taken towards the secession of Republika Srpska . In the letter, MEPs called on the two officials to condemn those steps “in strong terms” and use the means available to “bring nationalist forces to the political leadership of RS”.

While Dodik said that Republika Srpska’s consent to some other powers would be withdrawn and returned to the entity level, including the armed forces, MEPs assessed that the vote announced in the RS National Assembly was “unprecedented”.

“The votes in the relevant unit, namely the RS Assembly, announced for next week are unprecedented, and despite being illegal and unconstitutional, as well as the violation of the Dayton Agreement, have the potential to generate concrete bases for the RS leadership that “Continue with secessionist agendas and thus endanger stability and even peace throughout the Western Balkans.

They added that the word “war” has never been used as often and widely throughout the Balkans as in recent weeks and months, starting with Bosnia and Herzegovina in Kosovo and beyond. MEPs accused Serbia of being a “common denominator” in all tensions as a “creator and supporter” of the so-called “Serbian World”.

They warned that the planned vote in the entity parliament has the potential to jeopardize the stability of BiH and the region, as well as the prospects of EU countries. MEPs called on the EU and the Office of the High Representative (OHR) to “issue a strong and possibly joint statement condemning the vote on strong terms, as well as declaring it illegal”.

“Furthermore, we believe and expect that next week, the EU and the OHR will use all possible diplomatic influence, and finally the OHR Bonn Powers, to justify the nationalist forces in the RS political leadership. they emphasized.

The parliamentarians also underlined the “crucial importance” of EUFOR Althea, the EU military deployment in BiH and its task of securing the Dayton Peace Accords and BiH territorial integrity.
