Blinken to Borrell: Move forward in accession talks with Albania and northern Macedonia

Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken met on Thursday with EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and European Commission Vice President Josep Borrell in Washington, DC. United States to work together with the EU to meet common challenges.

The Secretary expressed appreciation for the EU’s continued support for the European perspective of the Western Balkans and its commitment to the enlargement process, and stressed the need to move forward in accession talks with Albania and Northern Macedonia.

The Secretary-General and the High Representative also stressed their strong support for efforts to restore democratic order in Venezuela.

The Secretary also thanked the High Representative for the role of the European External Action Service at the first successful US-EU Trade and Technology Council meeting.

They discussed their common concerns about higher energy prices and their effect on the global economic recovery and agreed to hold a ministerial meeting of the US-EU Energy Council in early 2022.

The Secretary reaffirmed the United States’ support for a stronger and more capable European defense that contributes positively to transatlantic and global security and is in line with NATO.

He and the High Representative underlined their intention to launch a dialogue dedicated to security and defense, as agreed at the June US-EU Summit, and instructed their teams to explore the scope and modalities of such a dialogue./ ibna
