In a Twitter post, the Turkish Foreign Minister congratulated Turkish Ambassador Volkan Bozkır, who completed his term as President of the 75th General Assembly of the United Nations.
“I congratulate Ambassador Volkan Bozkır, who successfully completed his term as President of the 75th General Assembly and completed it today. “Thank you, Brother Volkan, for representing our country in the best possible way and for your efforts to resolve global issues,” wrote Mevlut Cavusoglu.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement on the end of the mandate of the Turkish ambassador to the Presidency of the UN General Assembly.
Ambassador Volkan Bozkır, former Minister for EU Affairs and Chief Negotiator, ended his term on 14 September 2021 as President of the 75th session of the UN General Assembly.
The Presidency of the General Assembly is the highest-ranking elected office in the UN system. Ambassador Bozkır became the first Turkish citizen to hold the post in the 75-year history of the UN.
Despite the restrictions imposed by the Covid-19 pandemic, Ambassador Bozkır ensured the continued work of the General Assembly throughout his tenure. He led efforts to bring crises such as Palestine, Syria and Myanmar, which deeply damaged the conscience of the international community, to the agenda of the General Assembly. He supported initiatives to strengthen the General Assembly, as the only UN body, where all member states are equally represented.
Ambassador Bozkır gave priority to strengthening multilateralism, supporting less developed and developing countries, as well as those most affected by conflict, natural disasters and humanitarian crises, and strengthening the role of women in public life, and brought these issues also in the attention of the international public opinion during his official visits.
The realistic, decisive and responsible leadership he displayed during his tenure is highly regarded by the international community and the entire UN family.
We congratulate Ambassador Bozkır on his successful Presidency of the General Assembly and wish all success to his successor, Mr. Abdullah Shahid, during the 76th session of the General Assembly./ ibna
