EU Commissioner for Neighborhood and Enlargement Oliver Varhelyi pays first visit to Turkey September 6-7

The Commissioner had a meeting with Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu.

They discussed Turkey-EU relations in detail, Çavuşoğlu said on Twitter after the meeting.

Varhelyi then visited an émigré health center in the Altında district of the capital Ankara, funded by the EU Refugee Facility in Turkey (FRIT II).

Oliver Varhelyi posted on Twitter about his meeting with the Turkish Foreign Minister, “In Ankara today, welcome discussion on the state of EU relations with Turkey.”

Ankara and Brussels have revived discussions since the beginning of 2021, after a year-long strain on exploring for hydrocarbon reserves in the Eastern Mediterranean.

Turkey urges the bloc to resume membership negotiations, update the Customs Union, the March 18 Agreement and visa liberalization, in particular, to enter into force in its entirety.

Turkish and European officials have been holding talks over the past two years to review the Customs Union, which was blocked as a result of political tensions.ibna
