The OSCE Mission to Montenegro has supported the NGO Safe House of Women to increase its shelter capacity for survivors of domestic and gender-based violence by providing a prefabricated house in June 2021. Most recently, Siv-Katrine Leirtroe, Acting Head of Mission, visited the shelter.
State authorities and relevant NGOs reported an increase in the number of domestic violence-related cases during the COVID-19 pandemic, which required increased housing. Therefore, the Mission initiated consultations with civil society in order to identify and address the most urgent issues related to accommodation.
“The NGO House of Safe Women had already provided housing, but with insufficient capacity. “The mission implemented a project that resulted in an increase in the number of shelters from 12 to 17. Furthermore, the NGO can now house women with disabilities, which has not been the case in the past,” the OSCE Mission said. in Montenegro in the press release Me
During her visit to the shelter, Leirtroesa said that domestic and gender-based violence is a serious problem for any society and requires a systemic approach to solving it. “However, when violence occurs, having a safe place to shelter survivors is of paramount importance,” Leirtroe said.
Budislavka Mira Saveljić, Director of the NGO, thanked the Mission for the donation and noted that in the last two months, since they started using the house as an additional shelter, they have housed five women and three children, including a woman with a disability. . “We have long dreamed of a prefabricated house, as it turned out to be a necessity. Thanks to the OSCE Mission in Montenegro, our dream has finally come true,” Saveljić said.
In addition to supporting the Mission, an informal group called the OSCE Men for Gender Equality was set up at the OSCE Secretariat in Vienna, initiating a charity fundraiser, while the NGO Safe House of Women was identified as the beneficiary. The funds raised were used to equip the prefabricated house with educational content for children, ceramics for the kitchen, bedding, material for professional workshops and small household appliances.
The OSCE Mission to Montenegro will continue to support civil society institutions and organizations in promoting gender equality in societies with zero tolerance for gender-based violence.
