BiH: Turkovic meets with Borrell and other EU officials

EU High Representative / Vice President Josep Borrell met on Wednesday, March 10, 2021, with the Minister of Bosnia and Herzegovina Bisera Turković in Brussels, according to a statement from Borrell’s office.

During their talks, HR / VP Borrell encouraged Bosnia and Herzegovina to use 2021, a non-election year, to move forward resolutely in implementing the Commission’s 14 key priorities on applying for Bosnia and Herzegovina’s EU membership. He welcomed the recent positive steps on the reform agenda and underlined the EU ‘s commitment to supporting Bosnia and Herzegovina in further progress on its European path.

HR / VP Borrell recalled the migration crisis in Bosnia and Herzegovina in early 2021 and stressed the importance of establishing a sustainable migration and asylum system, with a fairer division of responsibilities across the country.

HR / VP Borrell and Foreign Minister Turkovi. Also discussed EU-Western Balkans co-operation in addressing the Covid-19 pandemic and access to vaccines in the region. The HR / VP recalled the € 70 million package of EU grants for the Western Balkans made available by the European Commission to help cover the cost of some doses procured by EU Member States. They also discussed support through the COVAX mechanism. The EU, like TEAM Europe, is one of the strongest supporters of the COVAX scheme, with more than € 2.2 billion (including € 1 billion in EU funding).

Finally, touching on the reconciliation process in Bosnia and Herzegovina, the HR / VP underlined the need to overcome the legacy of the past and progress from Dayton to Brussels. The EU supports the sovereignty, territorial integrity and political independence of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

During her visit to Brussels, Turkovic also met with several MEPs and senior EU officials such as European Commissioner for Home Affairs Ylva Johansson and EC Vice President Margaritis Schinas.
