Yesterday, 22 February 2021, Ambassador Andreas Hadjichrysanthou presented his credentials to the Secretary General of the United Nations António Guterres, as the Permanent Representative of the Republic of Cyprus to the UN.
During the presentation of the credentials, the Permanent Representative conveyed to the Secretary General the warm greetings of the President of the Republic and reiterated the commitment and full support of the President of the Republic in the current efforts of the UN Secretary General to convene an informal Meeting “5 + 1 “, which aims at the urgent resumption of substantive and result-oriented negotiations, to reach a comprehensive, lasting and sustainable solution based on a bi-municipal, bi-zonal political federation, as defined by the relevant Security Council resolutions, and EU principles and values. Andreas Hadjichrysanthou also assured the Secretary General that the Republic of Cyprus, as an EU Member State, remains fully committed to the fundamental values of the UN and the strengthening of the Organization as a pillar of effective multilateralism.
In response, the Secretary-General welcomed the Permanent Representative, saying that Cyprus is an important pillar of the UN and that the Organization and he personally remain committed to Cyprus. He recalled his involvement and commitment, both in the past during the Portuguese Presidency of the EU and now as UN Secretary General, especially during the Crans Montana negotiations. He added that the conditions are being created for the informal meeting ‘5 + 1’ to be convened soon so that we can start a serious process of talks and negotiations. The Secretary-General concluded by saying: “I want you to know how committed we are to Cyprus and its people.”
