Letter of invitation from President Charles Michel to the members of the European Council before its meeting on 17 and 18 July 2020
“On Friday, for the first time since the start of the COVID-19 crisis, we will be able to meet again here in Brussels.
The COVID-19 pandemic has claimed many lives across Europe and dealt a severe blow to our economies and societies. It continues to affect our lives. All our efforts must focus on building sustainable recovery. To this end, our meeting this week will be dedicated to the multiannual financial framework and the economic recovery plan.
Since our last summit in June, we have worked intensively with you and taken your concerns into account. Based on this, I presented a proposal to solve key problems and build bridges between different positions. It will take hard work and the political will of everyone to reach an agreement. Now is the time. Agreement is essential. For the greater benefit of our citizens, we will have to find workable solutions and reach an agreement.
Our meeting will begin on Friday at 10.00 with a traditional exchange of views with the President of the European Parliament, David Sassoli. We will then conduct the first working session and take it from there.
I look forward to seeing you again in Brussels! “/ibna
